The viola is a sort of cousin to the violin. It is larger than the violin, and trades out our highest string, E, for a C string. In that way, it is stringed like a cello, though an octave higher. Because it is larger, sometimes significantly (full sized violas have a wide range of sizes), it is more difficult to play, and in most ensembles plays a supporting role. That said there are some truly great viola pieces out there.
